TOP 5 'VHS' Gems

The first film I ever watched on video was the Ten Commandments, I didn't really want to watch it but in the early days of the VHS revolution pickings where slim but soon the titles began to come thick and fast (mostly thanks to Mr Kennedy and his dubious connections) and so Moses Heston was quickly followed by Gregory's Girl and Dawn of the Dead and a never ending procession of  flicks that never seemed to make it to the Odeon Cinema but made a lasting impression on the younger me and in some cases remain firm favorites to this day.

5. SUMMER SCHOOL
Before Bill & Ted there was Chainsaw & Dave

4. WILD THING
An updated urban Tarzan flck that isn't half as bad as it should be.

3. The BRONX WARRIORS
A rip off of a few far better flicks of the same time but has a car crash quality that keeps you watching

2. EVILSPEAK
Before the Korean's gave technology a supernatural twist Ron Howard's little brother Clint was using the might of a Commodore 64 to extract bloody vengeance on those foolish enough to cross him.

1. ONE CRAZY SUMMER.
A sequel of sorts to the better known Better Off Dead this was what I thought all my teenage summers would be like and in a small way I'm still waiting.....

The Green Hornet: Gas Station Protection Racket (1939 radio show)

The recent big budget version of the Green Hornet turned out to be a solid gold downer. Original casting rumors for the big screen adaptation had George Clooney as the 'Hornet and the actress Ziyi Zhang as Kato which for me would have been perfect (although Scott Pilgrims Ellen Wong would give the partnership a 'Dark Knight Returns' dynamic duo look) indeed the idea of a female Kato is now being used in the current comic series from Dynamite Comics. My ideal silver screen Hornet flick would have  Kato as a graceful martial artist and the Green Hornet as an Elliot Ness style gangbusting bruiser who wages war on the cities mobsters like the old time radio shows. Mix Batman with the Untouchables, replace Al Capone with Fu Manchu as the bad guy, have Quentin Tarantino write it and Robert Rodriguez direct it and give us a fun, pulp fiction crime fighter with a sting in his tail.
